Dental services are an essential part of out health: after all without teeth we can’t eat, teeth can also cause severe pain though and the health of our mouths effects how we look, and even how we smell of course.

Because of the range of problems and issues relating to the mouth dentistry is offered by specialists rather than by a general family doctor. Areas of dentistry as well such as oral hygiene and orthodontistry have specialists who just cover those areas.

With a general dentist you will usually see them when you go for a check up, a check up is important so a dentist can spot problems before they develop: this includes damaged and rotting teeth that may need a filing or a crown but also hygiene problems, gingivitis, gum disease and bad breath can all be spotted in early stages by a good dentist. If problems with teeth are found a dentist can do a lot now to treat them. Even replacement teeth are much more effective now than they were in the past and look much more realistic. Tooth implants can be used in adults, they are unsuitable for children with mouths that are still developing, a tooth implant acts and looks very much like a real tooth. Often a implant isn’t needed mind you and veneers and crowns can be added to existing teeth to protect them and repair damage. Damage to teeth includes them being chipped or wearing down, especially in those that grind teeth. Teeth may also grow so that they don’t quite fit how they should and so a crown may fill a gap and make a tooth fit better with those above.

Talking of teeth not fitting this normally comes from problems in childhood, often a child through no fault of its own will have problems with teeth growing in the wrong direction, teeth may grow inwards, outwards, sideways or overlap. This can be painful but also may not look good once the child has grown up. A dentist may spot a problem with a child’s teeth and refer them to an orthodontist, an orthodontist though mat be worth visiting anyway, especially when the child’s second teeth are beginning to emerge. An orthodontist can use x-rays to make sure teeth have room to come up and to make sure they are coming up straight. If teeth aren’t coming up straight either existing teeth may have to be moved out of the way or some teeth may even need to be removed if there is a lack of space in the mouth. Later on once all teeth have grown it is in a child’s early teens that they are most likely to need braces to keep teeth straight as the shape and size of their mouths change. Even after that wisdom teeth still have to come so someone may be in there twenties before they have a mouth that has stopped developing. Hopefully they will have a nice straight and healthy looking smile, an occasional whitening of an adults teeth mind you at the dentist may be the final thing needed to make teeth look healthy and give you that killer smile.
